Agile2018 Recap – Day 0

Last year, when it was announced that Agile2018 would be in San Diego, I was really excited because I haven’t had a chance to visit San Diego and loved the opportunity.

Because of the Women in Agile conference, I had already decided to fly in a day early. Flight from Chicago was uneventful and flying into San Diego is really cool – you fly through the city and the tall buildings.

The Marriott Marquis (where the conference is) is huge! Check in was fast, and I was given a great room with a view of the marina (yay Marriott Elite status!). There’s also a refrigerator in the room, so I ran over to a nearby grocery to stock up on some items for the week.

Then it was off to La Jolla for a Segway tour of the city with We Love Tourists, and it was awesome. As I write this, I’m sitting at Donovan’s in La Jolla overlooking the Pacific and hearing the Sea Lions below me.

Because of a website booking snafu (does anyone have any testing services they want to offer?), I ended up having a private tour with an amazing guide, Todd. It was my first time on a Segway, and it was easy to pick-up. We rode all through the town, stopping to point out various storefronts with histories and neat local haunts.

Then we headed down to the coastline – wow. It’s gorgeous, with multi-million dollar homes lining it. Lots of parks and beaches, and a nice cool ocean breeze. We got to see quite a bit and even had time to spend with the Sea Lions at the cove. The Seal cove was difficult to get to with the construction underway.

La Jolla is more than I expected; mostly because I’m always so impressed with how varied the California coastline is. The rockiness of the coast along La Jolla was surprising to me. The homes are all amazing and unique – definitely not the cookie-cutter sameness that one finds throughout most of America. Even saw Mitt Romney’s house.

Feeling very grateful and lucky to be able to have had the day that I had, and looking forward to tomorrow and the Women in Agile conference. Can’t wait to hear this year’s protege’s talks and see our amazing mentors.
